30 Day Tidying Challenge • Day 20 • Linens & Bedding

Welcome to Day 20 of the #30daytidyingchallenge! This challenge runs from February 18th to March 19th, and if you're tidying with me over the next 10 days, the plan is to be finished in time for the first day of spring on March 20th (or the March Equinox if you are located in the Southern Hemisphere). This tidying challenge is based on the KonMari method, and I was hugely inspired by these three resources: The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up and Spark Joy, and Tidying Up with Marie Kondo.

To help with the process, I put together this calendar, which shows all the different categories I'll be tidying during the 30 day challenge. Depending on your situation, you may want to tackle this project over a number of months, and that is totally ok too! You can still use the calendar--just follow the order, but take more time for each set of categories.

On Day 20, we'll be tidying our just because items, also known as our junk drawer items. This could include spare buttons, keychains, old keys, old phone cases, and any other this and that.

Some thoughts on Day 20:

1) We likely don't need as many linens as we think. Linens can develop a musty scent when stored away for some time. For this reason, I'm going to try to keep only one or two sets of bed sheets going forward. We typically only use one set anyway, as I wash them and put them right back on the bed when they're warm and smelling fresh straight out of dryer. We keep a lot of old bed sheets for our rabbit, but we were also able to pare down on his collection, since he doesn't really use his playpen much anymore. He's always out in the living room with us. :) I'm also going to try the same approach with towels (use one main set, and perhaps keep another set as backup).

2) Thinking of linens as functional rather than decorative saves a lot of storage space. Hubby and I have never really gotten into having a lot of seasonal or decorative throws and pillows. We have a lot of throws, but they're out all year round so we can snuggle up and keep cozy in the condo. We had some decorative pillows before, but we also have a rabbit who has a tendency to chew on pillows and linens, so we've only kept a few functional (albeit rabbit-chewed) pillows.

Thank you for tuning into Day 20! If you're tidying alongside me, please let me know how you're doing. I would love to hear about your journey and if you have any tips or tricks to share. I'll see you tomorrow for Day 21.

  1. As part of letting go of linens, I decided that it was time to let go of our air mattress. I always loved the idea of being able to host guests, but when we finally settled in a one-bedroom loft condo I realized that it was no longer practical. Combined with the reality that we have only had 2 people stay within the last several years, it was time. We kept a fitted sheet and an extra pillow in case we had an emergency couch guest, but everything else is being donated. It felt like a huge weight had been lifted to let go of so many items and the false view that we would someday use them. It also freed up a ton of storage which will help our other items be more visible!

    1. That's amazing that you were able to let go of so much! It sounds like you put a lot of thought into what you will truly need and use going forward. I'm trying to do the same, but I struggle and keep a bit too much. I'm a lot better than I once was, but I still have a long way to go!
